Methylene Blue (Methylthioninium Chloride) is used to treat methaemoglobinemia by chemically reducing the ferric iron (Fe3+) in haemoglobin to ferrous iron (Fe2+). Sodium nitrite converts ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron (Fe3+).
