A gel tube (such as a Serum Separator Tube or Plasma Separator Tube) is a specialized blood collection tube containing an inert thixotropic polymer gel and often a clot activator or anticoagulant. During centrifugation, the gel moves to form a physical barrier between the liquid portion of the blood (serum or plasma) and the cellular components.
