Citrate agar contains sodium citrate as the sole carbon source and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate as the sole nitrogen source. The medium also contains bromothymol blue as a pH indicator. When organisms can use citrate as a carbon source, they produce an alkaline reaction that changes the color of the agar from green to blue.
