Damp Proof Course (DPC) describes:
A Damp Proof Course is a horizontal barrier in a wall, made of waterproof material, that prevents moisture from rising up through the wall by capillary action.
Key points:
1. Purpose: Stops rising damp / ground moisture from moving up into the building walls
2. Location: Usually laid 150mm to 300mm above ground level, in the brickwork of external walls
3. Materials: Can be made of bitumen, plastic, slate, or engineering bricks
4. Why it matters: Without DPC, water from the ground can rise up the wall, causing paint to peel, plaster to crumble, mold, and damage to the structure
In short: DPC = a waterproof layer in walls to block moisture from the ground.
