A Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA) is a flexible tube inserted through the nose to keep the airway open. Its main uses are:
• Preventing Obstruction: It keeps the tongue from falling back and blocking the throat in unconscious or sedated patients.
• Bypassing the Mouth: Used when a patient has a "locked jaw" (trismus) or facial injuries that make mouth access impossible.
• Managing Gag Reflex: It is better tolerated than oral airways for patients who are semi-conscious or awake.
• Suctioning: Provides a path to clear mucus and secretions from the back of the throat.
