Key Features and Principle
The medium relies on two specific chromogenic substrates to differentiate target organisms, typically Salmon GAL and X-glucuronide.
Total Coliforms: Cleave the Salmon GAL substrate, resulting in distinct pink to red colonies.
E. coli: Produces both β-D-galactosidase and β-D-glucuronidase enzymes. This combination cleaves both chromogens, creating dark blue to violet colonies.
Selectivity: It contains Tergitol-7 to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and non-coliform Gram-negative bacteria
