A high school diploma is usually the minimum requirement, but formal vocational training or an apprenticeship in fashion design or textile arts provides a strong competitive edge. Ability to safely and efficiently operate standard tools, including industrial sewing machines, sergers (overlockers), irons, and cutting instruments. Good eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills for detailed stitching, threading, and handling delicate fabrics over.

Mastery of various stitches, seams, hemming, and hand-sewing techniques. Understanding of different fabric types, their stretch factors, and how they behave under a needle. Expertise in resizing and repairing finished clothes. Precision in measuring and inspecting final products for loose threads or misaligned seams. Ability to fix sewing mistakes and meet strict project deadlines.
