HIV PrEP — Protect Yourself Before Exposure
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication taken by HIV-negative people to prevent getting HIV. When taken correctly, it is up to 99% effective.
What it is:
PrEP is a daily pill (commonly Truvada or Descovy) that stops HIV from establishing infection in your body if you're exposed to the virus.
Who should use it:
People with an HIV-positive partner
Those who don't consistently use condoms
People who have multiple sexual partners
Anyone who injects drugs and shares needles
How to use it:
Take one pill every day at the same time
When to start:
Start PrEP before any potential exposure to HIV. It takes about 7 days to reach full protection for anal sex, and 21 days for vaginal sex.
Important: PrEP does not protect against other STIs. Always combine with condoms for fuller protection.
