An X-ray grid is a device used in diagnostic radiography to reduce the amount of scattered radiation that reaches the X-ray film or digital detector. Scattered radiation is produced when X-rays interact with the patient’s body and change direction. If not controlled, this scatter causes the image to look foggy and lowers its contrast and detail.
Structure
A grid is made of many thin strips of lead (which absorb X-rays) separated by radiolucent material such as plastic or aluminum (which allows the useful primary X-ray beam to pass through).
The strips are aligned so that only the straight primary X-rays coming from the X-ray tube can pass between them.
