A body fat caliper is a handheld measuring tool used to estimate the percentage of body fat in a person. It works by measuring the thickness of a fold of skin (called a skinfold) at specific points on the body, such as the abdomen, thigh, triceps, or back.
How it works
1. The user or a trained professional gently pinches a fold of skin and the layer of fat underneath (not the muscle).
2. The caliper’s jaws are placed around the pinched skinfold.
3. The device measures the thickness in millimeters.
4. Measurements from several body sites are put into a formula or chart to estimate total body fat percentage.
