An infusion giving set is a sterile medical device used to deliver fluids or medications directly into a patient’s bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. It connects the fluid container (such as an IV bag or bottle) to the patient’s cannula or IV catheter.
Main Components:
Drip chamber: Allows observation of the fluid flow and helps prevent air bubbles.
Fluid line (tubing): Flexible, sterile tubing that carries the fluid from the container to the patient.
Roller clamp or flow regulator: Controls the rate at which the fluid is infused.
Injection port or Y-site: Lets healthcare workers inject additional medications without starting another IV line.
Luer lock or spike: The spike attaches to the fluid container; the luer lock connects to the patient’s IV cannula.
