How to Test Tie Rod Ends
The 3 and 9 o'clock test: Lift the front of the car so the tires are off the ground. Grab each front tire at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions and rock it back and forth. Play, clicking, or loose movement means the tie rod is worn.
