The main function of a car clutch disc (friction disc) is to transfer torque and rotational power from the engine flywheel to the transmission's input shaft, while allowing the driver to smoothly engage or disconnect that power.
Key Functions of the Clutch Disc
• Torque Transmission: It grips the rotating engine flywheel (via the pressure plate's clamping force) so engine rotation passes directly into the gearbox and wheels.
• Power Disconnection: When you press the clutch pedal, the pressure lifts off, allowing the disc to spin independently. This breaks power flow so you can safely shift gears or stop without stalling.
• Smooth Engagement: Its friction linings and wave (cushioning) springs let the engine and transmission lock up gradually rather than slamming together violently
