The main function of a car pressure plate is to apply and release clamping force on the clutch disc, connecting and disconnecting engine power from the transmission.
Key Functions
• Clamping the Clutch Disc: It bolts to the engine's flywheel and uses internal springs (diaphragm or coil) to press the clutch disc tightly against the flywheel. This friction transfers engine torque to the transmission input shaft.
• Disengaging the Transmission: When you press the clutch pedal, the release bearing pushes against the pressure plate's springs. This lifts the pressure plate away from the clutch disc, interrupting power flow so you can safely change gears.
• Re-engaging Power: When you release the clutch pedal, the springs push the plate back down onto the clutch disc, restoring torque transfer to the wheels.
