The starter Bendix (or Bendix drive) is a critical engagement mechanism that connects the electric starter motor to the engine’s flywheel, allowing it to start. It acts as an automatic engagement/disengagement clutch, engaging the pinion gear to crank the engine, then instantly retreating to prevent the engine from over-speeding the starter.
