The bumper under panel is the plastic splash shield mounted below the front bumper.
Main functions:
It smooths airflow under the car to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. That flat surface cuts turbulence and helps the car stay stable at speed.
It protects the engine bay and front components from water, dirt, rocks, and road debris kicked up by the tires. Without it, water and grime get thrown straight onto the alternator, belts, and wiring.
It helps with engine cooling and aerodynamics by directing air toward the radiator and away from hot areas. Some designs also create a slight negative pressure to pull hot air out of the bay.
Why it matters if it’s missing:
You’ll get more wind noise, reduced cooling efficiency. On Mercedes, a missing or sagging under panel can also cause the front bumper to hang low and scrape.
