The flywheel bearing (commonly known as a pilot bearing or pilot bushing) supports the front tip of the transmission input shaft, keeps it centered with the engine crankshaft, and reduces rotational friction.
Main Functions of a Flywheel (Pilot) Bearing
• Supports the Transmission Shaft: It holds the end of the manual transmission input shaft steady as it enters the back of the crankshaft.
• Reduces Friction: It uses caged balls, rollers, or a porous bronze bushing to minimize metal-on-metal friction and heat between the spinning crankshaft and the stationary or differently-spinning input shaft.
• Prevents Misalignment: It ensures the clutch disc and transmission line up properly, preventing premature wear on the clutch, transmission, and bearings
